Megas Oenos is the emblematic wine of Domaine Skouras, a pioneering Greek estate established in 1986 by George Skouras, who trained in enology in Dijon, France. This bold dry red wine holds the distinction of being one of the first blends of a Greek and an international variety in Greek wine history, earning it PDO Nemea status from the Peloponnese region.
The blend is 80% Agiorghitiko and 20% Cabernet Sauvignon, sourced from old-vine vineyards on the slopes of Gymno in Nemea and mountainous Corinth at 700 meters altitude. The original plantings date to 1939, rooted in rocky soil composed of clay, sand, and limestone. Grapes are harvested by hand with careful sorting in the vineyard. The wine matures in new French barrels for 18 months, including 4 months sur lie, followed by at least 6 additional months of bottle aging at the winery.
The wine displays an intense deep garnet color with violet highlights. On the nose it offers depth and complexity with aromas of raspberry, cherry, blueberry, blackberry, spices, tobacco, and leather. The palate is silky yet robust with gentle tannins, balanced acidity, and notes of cloves, black pepper, and herbs leading to a long, complex finish. The wine has significant aging potential exceeding 20 years and pairs well with lamb stew, grilled meats, and aged cheeses.
