Château Sénéjac is a classic red Bordeaux from the Haut-Médoc appellation, produced at a historic 41-hectare estate in the commune of Le Pian-Médoc at the far southern end of the Haut-Médoc. The estate dates back to the 1500s and is today managed by the Cordier family following their acquisition in 1999.
The wine is a blend of 52% Cabernet Sauvignon, 36% Merlot, 8% Cabernet Franc, and 4% Petit Verdot grown on gravel soils. Vinification takes place in thermoregulated stainless steel tanks, with malolactic fermentation in barrels. The wine is then aged in 33% new French oak barrels for 12 to 15 months. Annual production is approximately 16,000 cases.
On the nose, expect notes of dark cherries, red currants, cedar, tobacco leaf, and espresso, with a medium-bodied palate that is round, fruity, and soft with well-integrated tannins. The wine consistently receives scores in the 88–93 range across recent vintages. It is best enjoyed with 4 to 8 years of bottle age and reaches peak maturity between 6 and 15 years. Decanting for 1 to 2 hours is recommended for younger vintages.
Pairs well with classic meat dishes including beef, lamb, veal, pork, duck, and game, as well as roasted or braised preparations, hearty fish such as tuna, mushrooms, pasta, and aged cheeses. Serve at 15.5°C (60°F).
