Château Rouget is a prestigious red wine from the Pomerol appellation of Bordeaux's Right Bank, one of France's most celebrated wine-producing regions. The estate has one of the longest histories in Pomerol, with origins dating back to the 1700s, and is today owned and managed by Edouard Labruyere, whose family acquired the property in 1992. With approximately 17 hectares of vines, Château Rouget is among the largest estates in the Pomerol appellation, located in the northern part alongside neighbors such as Château Trotanoy and Château Petit Village.
The wine is a blend of 85% Merlot and 15% Cabernet Franc grown in soils of gravel, sand, and clay with iron-rich subsoils. Vines average 28 years of age and are planted at 6,000 vines per hectare. Vineyard management has been certified organic since the 2023 vintage. Winemaking involves partial whole-berry and whole-cluster fermentation, with malolactic fermentation completed in barrel. The wine is then aged for 15 to 18 months in 50% new French oak barrels. Michel Rolland has served as consulting winemaker since 1997.
Château Rouget consistently earns scores in the 90–94-point range across multiple vintages and represents one of the stronger values in the Pomerol appellation. Aromas typically include plums, black cherries, licorice, cocoa, truffles, and flowers, with a silky, round, and medium-bodied palate. The wine is best served at 15.5°C (60°F) with one to two hours of decanting and pairs well with beef, lamb, veal, duck, game, roast chicken, mushroom dishes, and hearty pasta. Most vintages drink well between 5 and 20 years from the harvest date.
