Sárga Borház Tokaji Aszú 5 Puttonyos is a celebrated Hungarian dessert wine from the legendary Tokaj wine region, one of the oldest and most prestigious appellations in the world. Long before Bordeaux's Sauternes gained its reputation, Tokaji wines graced the tables of European royalty and connoisseurs under the motto "Vinum Regum, Rex Vinorum" — Wine of Kings, King of Wines. Costco carries this exceptional wine in a 500ml bottle format, sold as a pack of six.
This wine is crafted using the traditional Aszú method, where grapes affected by noble rot (Botrytis cinerea) are hand-harvested one by one, crushed, and macerated with a base wine to extract their concentrated sugars, acids, and flavors. The wine then matures for a minimum of three years before release. The 5 Puttonyos designation indicates a residual sugar level between 120 and 150 grams per liter, placing it firmly in the luscious, sweet style of Tokaji. The 2019 vintage is made from 100% Furmint grapes grown at La Maison Jaune (Château Hellha) and earned 93 points from James Suckling, who praised its "vivid acidity" and called it "very attractive and easy to drink."
On the nose, expect complex aromas of ripe apricots, honey, and candied citrus peel. The palate is velvety smooth, offering flavors of golden raisins, marmalade, and baked apple, with subtle notes of toasted almonds and warm spice. The long, elegant finish lingers with caramel and butterscotch nuances. Despite its sweetness, the wine's bright natural acidity keeps it fresh and balanced, giving it exceptional aging potential — this wine can develop gracefully in the cellar for decades.
Though classified as a dessert wine, it is remarkably versatile. Serve slightly chilled alongside foie gras, aged cheeses, dark chocolate, crème brûlée, caramelized apple dishes, or spiced savory Asian cuisine. It also makes a sophisticated aperitif on its own.
