Ink Grade Andosol is a bold and polished red wine blend from Napa Valley, crafted by Master Sommelier Carlton McCoy Jr. The wine is sourced from the Ink Grade Estate Vineyard, situated on steep, terraced slopes in the northeast corner of the Howell Mountain AVA at approximately 2,200 feet elevation. Its name, "Andosol," refers to the vineyard's distinctive volcanic tufa soils composed of ancient rock and ash from the Miocene era, which impart characteristic iron and mineral complexity.
The blend is composed of 89% Zinfandel and 11% Cabernet Sauvignon, inspired by historic California field blends and European winemaking tradition. The wine is aged for 8 months in oak tanks, followed by 24 months in foudre and barrels with 70% new oak, allowing it to develop structure and depth suitable for both immediate enjoyment and long-term cellaring. The 2018 vintage was harvested between September 5 and September 26, yielding 2,684 cases at 14% alcohol by volume.
The nose offers floral aromas of lilacs and roses, while the palate reveals ripe black cherries, strawberries, and pink peppercorn, with iron and tar notes grounded by fine tannins and lively acid tension โ a profile that has drawn comparisons to a cru Barolo. The 2018 vintage received 94 points from Wine Enthusiast.
