The Black Hills Spruce (Picea glauca var. densata) is a naturally occurring geographic variety of White Spruce, endemic to the Black Hills of South Dakota. This #10 container-sized specimen is a dense, slow-growing evergreen tree prized for its attractive bluish-green foliage and symmetrical, upright pyramidal form.

Mature trees typically reach 20 to 40 feet tall with a spread of 15 to 25 feet. The short, stiff needles maintain their blue-green color year-round, and the tree produces small pendulous cones that mature from maroon to brown. Its slow, dense growth habit makes it notably more compact and tidy than many other spruces.

Black Hills Spruce thrives in full sun with a minimum of 6 hours of direct sunlight daily and adapts well to average, well-drained soils. It is extremely cold hardy (USDA Zone 3 and above), drought-tolerant once established, and well-suited to urban environments. It is an excellent choice for use as a landscape specimen, privacy screen, windbreak, or large accent planting. The dense canopy also provides valuable wildlife habitat, offering nesting sites for birds such as juncos, grosbeaks, crossbills, and chickadees. Avoid fertilizing in fall to prevent tender late-season growth that may not harden off before winter.
