Château Canon Chaigneau "Cuvée 8a Béton" is a distinctive red blend from the Lalande-de-Pomerol appellation in Libourne, Bordeaux, France. Named after the concrete vat ("cuve 8a") in which it is crafted — "béton" meaning concrete in French — this wine is a pure, oak-free expression of the estate's unique terroir. It is composed of 90% Merlot, 7% Cabernet Franc, and 3% Pressac (Malbec), sourced from younger vine parcels across the estate's 21 hectares of clay, limestone, and iron-rich soils.
The wine is made by Thierry Garnaud, who served as Maître de Chai at the legendary Château Cheval Blanc for 38 vintages (1988–2018), presiding over numerous perfect 100-point scores. At Canon Chaigneau, he applies that same expertise to craft wines of exceptional quality and value. The Cuvée 8a Béton is vinified and matured entirely in concrete tanks for 12 months, with no oak influence, resulting in a more approachable, earlier-drinking style than the estate's grand vin.
The 2020 vintage delivers supple and generous dark red and purplish fruit with floral and spice overtones. On the palate it is medium-bodied with fine, grainy tannins, notes of black olive and dark fruit, and a saline finish of notable purity and complexity. Wine Advocate described it as "worth hunting down," while Vinous praised the "striking purity of the flavors." Alcohol: 14.5%.
