The Cercis Flame Thrower® (Cercis canadensis 'NC2016-2') is a premium ornamental Eastern Redbud tree celebrated for its spectacular multicolored foliage display. Bred by Dennis J. Werner at North Carolina State University, this award-winning cultivar was named Plant of the Year at the Royal Horticultural Society Chelsea Flower Show in 2021.

In early spring, dense clusters of pea-shaped pink-purple flowers emerge directly on bare branches before the leaves appear, creating a stunning floral display. As foliage unfolds, leaves emerge purple and quickly shift to red as they expand, then transition through reddish-bronze to yellow-green tones as the season progresses. Multiple color stages can appear on a single branch simultaneously, making this one of the most visually dynamic landscape trees available.

This tree grows 15–20 feet tall and 10–15 feet wide with a slightly pendant, multi-stemmed habit, making it well-suited as a specimen or accent tree in smaller yards and garden beds. It thrives in full sun to partial shade and adapts to a wide range of soil types including clay, loam, and sand. Hardy in USDA Zones 5–9. The Flame Thrower Redbud also provides ecological value as a host plant for Henry's Elfin butterfly and supports bees, butterflies, and songbirds. Sold as a 9.64-gallon container plant.
