Château d'Issan 2022 is a prestigious red Bordeaux wine from the Margaux appellation in the Médoc, produced by one of the oldest wine estates in Bordeaux. A Troisième Grand Cru Classé (Third Growth) in the 1855 Classification, the château's history dates to 1152 when its wine was served at the royal wedding of Eleanor of Aquitaine and King Henri II. The estate is located just 800 meters from the Gironde estuary in Margaux, where gravel soils over clay and limestone impart elegance and precision to its wines. The property covers 127 hectares with 52 hectares under vine at a density of 9,000 vines per hectare, with an average vine age of 35 years and some parcels exceeding 70 years.
The 2022 vintage is a blend of approximately 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, 2% Cabernet Franc, 2% Malbec, and 1% Petit Verdot. The wine is aged for 18 months in 50% new French oak barrels, with malolactic fermentation conducted in tank for the Cabernets and in barrel for the Merlot. The 2022 vintage was ranked #1 in Top 100 World Wines for 2025. It offers a deep dark reddish-purple garnet color with a nose of ripe dark cherries, blackcurrant, plum, violets, espresso, tobacco, minerals, and cedar. On the palate it is medium-to-full bodied with smooth, well-balanced tannins and flavors of cherries, blueberries, herbs, spice, and oak. The finish is lingering and persistent.
Young vintages benefit from decanting 2–3 hours before serving. The wine reaches its best drinking window after 8–12 years of bottle age, with peak maturity between 12 and 30 years from the vintage. Serve at 15.5°C (60°F). An excellent match with classic meat dishes including beef, lamb, duck, and game, as well as mushroom-based dishes and aged cheeses.
