The Heaven & Earth Grocery Store is a celebrated 2023 novel by award-winning American author James McBride, published by Riverhead Books (Penguin Random House). Running 400 pages, it is a richly layered work of historical fiction set in the Chicken Hill neighborhood of Pottstown, Pennsylvania, during the 1920s and 1930s.
The story begins in 1972, when an excavation uncovers a skeleton at the bottom of a well alongside a mezuza, prompting questions about the town's past. The narrative then sweeps back to the 1920s and '30s to illuminate the lives of Black and Jewish residents who shared the Chicken Hill community. At the center are Moshe and Chona Ludlow, a Jewish couple who run a local theater and The Heaven & Earth Grocery Store, and Nate Timblin, a Black man who works for them. When a young deaf Black boy named Dodo faces institutionalization at the notorious Pennhurst State School and Hospital by a racist local physician, the Black and Jewish townspeople join together to protect him. McBride explores how solidarity and humanity can transcend racial and cultural divides even in an era of prejudice.
The novel received widespread critical acclaim, with The New York Times calling it "a charming, smart, heart-blistering and heart-healing novel" and NPR praising it as "one of the best novels" of the year. It won the 2023 Kirkus Prize for Fiction, the National Jewish Book Award for Fiction, the Libby Book Award, the Ohioana Book Award, the Sophie Brody Medal, and the Jewish Fiction Award. It was also named one of The New York Times 100 Notable Books of 2023 and shortlisted for the Aspen Words Literary Prize and the PEN/Faulkner Award.
