Calluna Vineyards Cuvée CVC is a Bordeaux-inspired red blend sourced from the winery's 17-acre estate in the Chalk Hill AVA, a prestigious sub-appellation of Sonoma County situated on the western exposure of the Mayacamas Mountain range. The estate was planted in 2005 by founder and winemaker David Jeffrey, whose goal is to craft wines that authentically reflect the character of the land.
The Cuvée is built primarily on Merlot, with Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec, and Petit Verdot rounding out the blend. The cool-climate conditions of Chalk Hill produce intense fruit with balancing acidity, round tannins, and moderate alcohol. The wine opens with aromas of black currant, cinnamon, and cloves, leading to deep flavors of blueberry and black cherry shaded by cedar and toast. Critics have described it as "generous, complex, and nicely spiced," with earlier vintages showing notes of dark chocolate, leather, pipe tobacco, and damp forest floor.
Calluna Vineyards was named one of Wine & Spirits Top 100 Wineries in 2015, and Robert M. Parker Jr. praised the wines as "impressive, made very much in an elegant French style, but with the California purity and ripeness of fruit well displayed." Food & Wine Magazine noted that had this fruit been planted across the county line in Napa, the equivalent wine would cost double the price.
