The Cambridge History of Greek and Roman Warfare, Volume 2 is a comprehensive scholarly reference covering Roman military history from the Late Republic through the sixth-century empire of Justinian and his successors. Edited by Philip Sabin, Hans van Wees, and Michael Whitby, this 630-page hardcover volume brings together contributions from leading historians of ancient warfare, including Adrian Goldsworthy, Harry Sidebottom, Boris Rankov, Catherine Gilliver, and Colin Adams.
The volume is organized into twelve thematic chapters arranged in two matched sets of six. The first set examines "The Late Republic and the Principate," while the second addresses "The Later Roman Empire." Each set systematically covers international relations, military forces and organization, strategy and tactics, pitched battles, state-military relations, and warfare's role in society. This parallel structure allows readers to trace the evolution of Roman military power across nearly seven centuries of history.
Supplemented by 54 black-and-white illustrations, 7 maps, a glossary, a chronology, and biographical notes on contributors, the volume serves as both a specialist reference and an accessible introduction to Roman military studies. Published by Cambridge University Press in 2007, it is also available as part of a two-volume hardback boxed set that includes Volume 1, covering Greek and Hellenistic warfare.
