The 2022 Château Beychevelle is a celebrated red Bordeaux blend from the Saint-Julien appellation in the Médoc, produced by one of Bordeaux's Fourth Growth classified estates (4ème Grand Cru Classé). Founded in the 17th century and owned by Grands Millésimes de France, the château spans over 222 acres on two deep gravel plateaus adjacent to the Gironde River — an exceptional terroir for Cabernet Sauvignon. Winemaker Philippe Blanc, celebrating his 28th vintage at the estate, called 2022 potentially the finest of his tenure.
The wine blends 54% Cabernet Sauvignon, 42% Merlot, and 4% Petit Verdot, aged for 18 months in 70% new French oak barrels. Harvested September 12–29 at 36 hL/ha, the wine reaches 14% ABV with a pH of 3.85. It displays a very dark color with black tints, offering aromas of black cherries, blueberry, cedar, tobacco wrapper, violets, and graphite. The palate is rich and generous with silky, finely polished tannins, exceptional freshness and concentration, and a long, chalky finish with notes of sweet red and black fruits and creamy texture.
The 2022 Beychevelle earned 97 points from both Jeb Dunnuck ("never failed to impress me") and The Wine Cellar Insider, 96 from Vinous Media ("one of the most seductive Beychevelles I have tasted from barrel"), and 95 from both Decanter and James Suckling. Wine Spectator called the 2022 Bordeaux vintage "a new paradigm for Bordeaux." Best enjoyed from 2027 through 2060. Pairs beautifully with steak, grilled meats, and hearty braised dishes.
