Château Cos d'Estournel is a storied Second Growth (Deuxième Grand Cru Classé) estate in the Saint-Estèphe appellation of Bordeaux's Médoc region, founded in 1811 by Louis Gaspard d'Estournel. The château is renowned for its iconic Oriental-inspired pagoda architecture and is consistently regarded as one of the finest estates in all of Bordeaux.
The 2022 vintage is a blend of 61% Cabernet Sauvignon, 37% Merlot, 1% Cabernet Franc, and 1% Petit Verdot, sourced from the estate's oldest vines, which average 55 years of age. At 14.04% alcohol by volume, the wine balances the hallmark opulence of Cos d'Estournel with a freshness that is somewhat unexpected given the year's unusual growing conditions. It opens with aromas of graphite, white pepper, and black tea before revealing sweet notes of licorice, cherry, and blackberry. The texture has been described as cashmere-like, with exceptional concentration and a seemingly endless finish.
The 2022 vintage earned outstanding critical scores, including 98–99/100 from James Suckling and 97/100 from Antonio Galloni at Vinous, and is considered one of the most captivating recent expressions of this singular Saint-Estèphe terroir. The wine carries excellent aging potential and rewards long-term cellaring.
