Château de Camensac is a storied Bordeaux estate classified as a Fifth Growth (Cinquième Cru) in the historic 1855 Classification, situated in the Haut-Médoc appellation just east of the prestigious St. Julien commune. The property's 65-hectare Left Bank vineyard rests on deep Villafranchian and Gunzian gravel terroir, which promotes healthy vine growth and well-ripened fruit. Owned since 2005 by Jean Merlaut and Céline Villars Loubet, with director Claire Thomas-Chenard guiding the estate since 2014, Camensac has been steadily transitioning to organic farming practices since 2016.
This 2022 vintage is a classic Haut-Médoc Bordeaux blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon and 40% Merlot, rated 91 points. The wine opens with aromas of currants, blackberries, cedar, and tobacco leaf, leading to a palate of ample fruit and freshness with a savory edge and a cranberry-tinged finish. Grapes are fermented in temperature-controlled stainless steel vats at 28°C for approximately six days, followed by a three-week maceration, then aged for 14 to 18 months in French oak barrels, 60% of which are new.
Decant one to two hours before serving and serve at 15.5°C (60°F). Best enjoyed from 2026 through 2038. Pairs beautifully with beef, lamb, duck, game, roasted and braised meats, charcuterie, and aged cheeses.
