Château Talbot is a prestigious Fourth Growth (4ème Grand Cru Classé) red Bordeaux wine from the Saint-Julien appellation in the Médoc, named after the legendary British soldier Connétable Talbot who fell at the Battle of Castillon in 1453. This 2022 vintage is produced from a blend of 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot, and 5% Petit Verdot, aged for 16 months in French oak barrels with 60% new oak, and carries 13.5% alcohol by volume.
The 2022 vintage has earned exceptional praise from wine critics, receiving scores of 96 points from both Wine Spectator and James Suckling, 95 points from Decanter, and 94 points from Vinous. Wine Spectator named it one of its Top 100 wines of 2022. The wine opens with aromas of cherries, blackberries, and cassis mingled with hints of violets, pencil lead, dark chocolate, toast, crushed chalk, and tobacco. On the palate it is medium to full-bodied, velvety, and concentrated, with layered dark fruit flavors, blackberry, boysenberry, and black currant paste supported by rich, polished tannins, a licorice snap accent, and a long, lively finish with iris and violet notes. The estate was acquired by the Cordier family in 1917 and is considered one of the benchmark producers of Saint-Julien. The 2022 is regarded as potentially one of the greatest vintages ever produced at the property, with an estimated aging potential of three decades.
