La Croix de Beaucaillou 2022 is the second wine of Château Ducru-Beaucaillou, one of Bordeaux's most celebrated Second Growth estates situated in the prestigious Saint-Julien appellation of the Médoc. The château takes its name from the French word "beaucaillou," meaning "beautiful stones," a nod to the estate's exceptional terroir of large gravel and pebble-rich soils that drain superbly and force the vines deep in search of water and nutrients. Owned and managed by the Borie family, Château Ducru-Beaucaillou has long been considered among the benchmark producers of Saint-Julien and all of Bordeaux.
La Croix de Beaucaillou is crafted as an original expression of the Ducru-Beaucaillou terroir, blending predominantly Cabernet Sauvignon with Merlot and smaller amounts of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. The wine is powerful, silky, and highly aromatic, captivating the palate with its bouquet, balance, remarkable finesse, and lengthy finish. Rich black-currant flavors weave through a dense but refined tannic structure, characteristic of the gravelly soils and the estate's meticulous viticulture. The wine is aged in French oak barrels, a practice that further deepens the complexity and adds layers of spice, cedar, and toasted notes to the red and dark fruit profile.
This 750ml bottle is an approachable entry point into the Borie winemaking style, offering the elegance and structured refinement associated with the grand estate at a more accessible price point than the flagship Château Ducru-Beaucaillou. Drinking windows for La Croix de Beaucaillou typically extend 10 to 15 years, rewarding patience for those who can cellar it, while already showing great complexity and depth upon release.
