Vieux Château Certan is one of the most celebrated estates in Pomerol, Bordeaux, with a history dating back to the mid-1700s. This 2022 vintage is a benchmark wine, earning a perfect 100-point score and widely regarded as one of the wines of the vintage. The blend is composed of 75% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Franc, and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon, aged for approximately 18 months in 50% new French oak barrels.
The 2022 delivers an opaque, deep color with an explosive nose of black, red, and blue fruits, dark chocolate, fresh flowers, and truffles. On the palate it is intensely concentrated yet perfectly balanced, with sensuous, supple, silky textures and a long, vibrant finish accented by a mild touch of salt and a refreshing hint of mint. The estate's 14-hectare single-block vineyard sits at the heart of the Pomerol plateau on clay, gravel, and sandy soils, neighbored by Petrus and Lafleur. Average vine age is 50 years, with one historic Merlot plot dating to 1932.
The property has been managed by the Thienpont family since 1924 and is currently overseen by Alexandre Thienpont and his son Guillaume. Fermentation takes place in a combination of traditional oak and stainless-steel vats, with Merlot undergoing malolactic fermentation in barrel and Cabernet Franc in vat. Annual production ranges from 4,000 to 5,000 cases. Young vintages benefit from 2–3 hours of decanting, and the wine reaches peak maturity between 15–35 years after the vintage. Best enjoyed at 15.5°C (60°F), it pairs well with lamb, beef, duck, game, roasted meats, and aged cheeses.
