Cheval des Andes is the "Grand Cru of the Andes," a prestigious red blend born from a partnership between Château Cheval Blanc of Bordeaux and Terrazas de los Andes of Mendoza, Argentina. Founded in 1999 under the vision of Pierre Lurton, President of Château Cheval Blanc, the wine was conceived to bring Bordeaux's winemaking philosophy — cellaring potential, elegance, and terroir expression — to the high-altitude vineyards at the foot of the Andes.
The blend draws from two distinct estate vineyards: Las Compuertas at 1,070 meters elevation in Luján de Cuyo, and Altamira in the Uco Valley. Grapes are harvested by hand, transported in 20 kg boxes in refrigerated trucks, and sorted manually before vinification. The winemaking follows a "one parcel, one tank" principle to preserve the character of each plot. Aging takes place over 16–18 months in a combination of 225-liter Bordeaux barrels, 400-liter barrels, and 2,500-liter foudres, using a mix of French and Austrian oak.
The 2021 vintage is composed of approximately 49% Cabernet Sauvignon, 48% Malbec, and 3% Petit Verdot, with 14.1% alcohol by volume. In the glass it presents a delicate ruby red with garnet glints. On the nose, aromas of jasmine, honeysuckle, and violets intertwine with red and forest fruits including currants, raspberries, and blueberries. On the palate, the wine is distinguished by its elegance, refreshing acidity, and silky tannins with a long, complex finish. The 2022 vintage earned a 97-point score from The Wine Advocate.
