J. de Villebois Sancerre Silex is a premium Sauvignon Blanc from the Sancerre AOP in France's Loire Valley, produced by Joost and Miguela de Willebois. The estate draws on a deep understanding of the region's geology to craft wines that authentically express their terroir, and Silex stands as their flagship expression of Sancerre's most distinctive soil type.
The wine is sourced from vineyards on the eastern hillsides of the Sancerre appellation along the Loire River, where clay-siliceous soils rich in flint (silex) date back 45 million years. This rare terroir represents only about 20% of the Sancerre appellation and gives the wine remarkable minerality, natural tension, and exceptional aging potential. The high concentration of stones in the rows causes earlier ripening, and harvest typically occurs in early September.
At the cellar, grapes are gently pressed for three hours, retaining only the free-run juice. After cold settling, the juice is split between concrete tanks and stainless steel tanks, where fermentation proceeds for seventeen days. The wine is then aged on fine lees for a minimum of eight months, with regular batonnage (lees stirring) three times per week for the first month, twice weekly through the third month, and weekly thereafter. The two parcels are blended before final resting.
The wine presents a pale yellow robe with green reflections. The nose reveals intense fruit notes alongside mineral and lemony undertones, with a hint of fennel and a finish that carries aniseed notes. On the palate it is precise and saline, displaying both tension and length. The 2022 vintage earned 92 points from James Suckling.
