Live orchid plant in a 6-inch pot, most likely a Phalaenopsis (moth orchid) variety. Phalaenopsis orchids are among the most popular houseplants, known for their graceful arching flower spikes that bloom for 2 to 6 months. These tropical orchids grow naturally on tree trunks and branches, developing aerial roots that may extend outside the container, which is perfectly normal growth.
These orchids thrive in bright, indirect light from an east or west window and prefer temperatures above 60°F at night with daytime temperatures between 75-85°F. Plants receiving proper light will have light green leaves. They require watering about once weekly when the potting medium is nearly dry, and benefit from 50-80% humidity. The bark-based potting medium should be replaced every 1-2 years before it breaks down.
Flower stalks grow from leaf joints and can reach 18-24 inches tall, often forming multiple buds and flowering branches. With proper care including adequate light exposure and cool fall night temperatures, orchids will rebloom reliably. Light fertilization every third or fourth watering during active growth promotes healthy flowering without excessive foliage.
