Donnachadh Chardonnay from the Sta. Rita Hills AVA of Santa Barbara County, California. Produced by Donnachadh Family Wines, a family-owned and organically farmed estate founded by Drew and Laurie Duncan. The 285-acre property, with approximately 40 acres planted to vine, sits along Santa Rosa Road just 9 miles from the Pacific Ocean. Morning fog and steady afternoon ocean breezes moderate temperatures throughout the growing season, allowing the Chardonnay grapes to ripen slowly and develop rich, complex flavors while retaining bright natural acidity. A subtle maritime salinity is a hallmark of the wine, reflecting its coastal origins.
The vineyard is divided into two distinct growing environments. The riverside blocks border the Santa Ynez River on well-drained sandy loam over deep gravel deposits, offering a more sheltered setting. The hillside blocks, more exposed to ocean winds, feature marine shale-derived soils rich in clay, rocks, and cobbles that stress the vines and concentrate flavors. Winemaker Ernst Storm draws inspiration from Burgundy and the Northern Rhone, crafting wines that express transparency and a sense of place. Tasting notes include citrus pith, soft nectarine, light yogurt, and crisp jicama on the nose, with wet chalk minerality, tightly wound lime, and a creamy dairy tension on the palate. Multiple vintages have earned Wine Enthusiast scores of 90–95 points. Sold as a case of 12 × 750ML bottles.
