Château Soutard is a prestigious Saint-Émilion Grand Cru Classé estate located in the heart of the Bordeaux Right Bank, France. One of the oldest properties in Saint-Émilion, the château traces its origins to 1513 and began earning recognition as a distinguished wine producer in the 18th century. The estate covers 30 hectares of limestone, clay, and sandy soils with gentle hillside slopes, with vines averaging 35 years of age planted at a density of 6,500 vines per hectare.
The wine is crafted from a blend of approximately 63% Merlot, 28% Cabernet Franc, 7% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 2% Malbec. Fermentation takes place in stainless steel vats before the wine is aged for 18 months in 60% new French oak barrels. Château Soutard underwent a complete renovation completed in 2011, including a state-of-the-art gravity-fed winemaking facility designed by architect Fabien Pedelaborde.
This red Bordeaux shows a deep ruby-red color with aromas of black fruits, red berries, flowers, licorice, dark chocolate, and earthy truffle notes. On the palate it is medium to full-bodied with refined, silky tannins and a fresh, elegant finish with lingering fruit and mineral complexity. Critics consistently award scores in the 88–95-point range across recent vintages. Best served at 15.5°C (60°F); decant young vintages for 60–90 minutes to open the perfume and soften the structure. The wine is approachable with 4–6 years of bottle age and drinks well through 20 years from vintage.
Pairs beautifully with lamb, beef, veal, duck, game, roasted or braised meats, mushroom dishes, pasta, and aged cheeses.
