Château Les Gravières is a prestigious Saint-Émilion Grand Cru from the Right Bank of Bordeaux, France, produced by the Denis Barraud estate. This 100% Merlot wine is crafted from a 4.5-hectare vineyard planted with old vines averaging 40 years of age, with some individual vines exceeding 50 years. The vineyard's distinctive terroir of deep gravel and sand soils over clay and limestone gives its name to the estate — "Les Gravières" — and imparts a mineral character that defines the wine's style.
Winemaking follows a meticulous process: vinification begins in stainless steel tanks following an 8 to 10-day cold maceration, then malolactic fermentation takes place in 100% new French oak barrels, where the wine continues to age for an average of 16 months before bottling. Production is intentionally limited to approximately 1,600 cases per vintage. The estate's wines are developed with the consultation of Jean Luc Thunevin of the renowned Valandraud property.
Aromatically, the wine opens with dark cherries, plums, licorice, espresso, cocoa, and floral notes, leading to a medium to full-bodied palate with polished tannins, fresh acidity, and a mineral-tinged finish. Recent vintages have earned scores ranging from 90 to 95 points. Best enjoyed with 4 to 6 years of bottle age, with peak maturity between 5 and 15 years. Decant 1 to 1.5 hours before serving at 60°F (15.5°C). Pairs beautifully with beef, lamb, duck, game, roasted chicken, hearty pasta, mushrooms, and tuna.
