The Washingtonia Palm (Washingtonia robusta), also known as the Mexican Fan Palm or Washington Palm, is a fast-growing tropical palm that delivers bold landscape appeal and an iconic silhouette. This specimen comes in a 14-inch, 5.14-gallon container (26.5 liters), ready for transplanting into the landscape or a larger decorative planter.
Washingtonias are among the most cold-hardy palms available, thriving from Zone 8 through the warmest climates and tolerating temperatures well below freezing once established. Their fan-shaped fronds extend dramatically from a stout gray trunk, and as the palm matures it develops a characteristic "petticoat" or "hula skirt" of dried fronds beneath the living green canopy, a hallmark of the species. Old leaf bases (called "boots") display an attractive bright red-brown color on young specimens.
This palm performs best in full sun with well-drained soil and good air circulation. It is moderately salt-tolerant and moderately drought-tolerant once established, though regular watering with periods to dry out in between produces the best growth. Fertilize in spring, summer, and fall with a quality palm fertilizer containing micronutrients. Plant at least 6 to 8 feet away from structures to allow the wide fronds room to spread. Be aware of the sharp teeth along the palm's leaf stems when handling.
Ideal uses include lining a property border, creating a dramatic architectural accent, anchoring groupings of smaller palms and shrubs, or planting in a row along a fence, walkway, or driveway.
