Lagunitas Shugga' Seasonal Ale is a strong ale originally created from a failed attempt at the 1997 batch of Olde GnarlyWine Ale, resulting in an all-new beer style that Lagunitas calls "Irresponsible." This seasonal variety pack contains 24 bottles of 12 oz each, featuring different versions of their cult-favorite Shugga' ales.
The Shugga' series includes variations like Unrefined Shugga', a winter-warming barleywine style strong ale at 10% ABV. It is brewed with malted barley, malted wheat, Munich malt, and crystal malts, then generously dry-hopped with Simcoe, Columbus, Cascade, and Centennial hops. The beer gets its distinctive character from the addition of whole cane Panela sugar (or brown cane sugar in the original Brown Shugga' recipe), which brings deep notes of molasses, toffee, candied malt sweetness, and slightly smoky, apple, vanilla, spicy, and savory undertones. Despite the raw sugar content, the fermentation process dries it out completely, leaving a super clean finish balanced by a firm hop backbone with dank, resinous character.
The beer features a complex flavor profile with caramelized brown sugar notes, molasses flavors layered with classic West Coast hop bitterness, pine, white and pink grapefruit pith and peel, tea biscuits, and pink peppercorns. This seasonal release has become a highly anticipated cult favorite, known for being rich, dangerously smooth, and basically the holidays in a glass. ABV ranges from 9.9% to 10% depending on the specific Shugga' variant.
