The Look is a stunning visual and literary journey through Michelle Obama's style evolution, published by Crown Publishing Group (an imprint of Penguin Random House) on November 4, 2025. Beautifully illustrated with more than 200 photographs—including many never-before-published images—this 304-page hardcover book tells the story of how Michelle Obama learned to use fashion as a powerful form of self-expression, identity, and advocacy, in her own words for the first time.
From her earliest appearances during Barack Obama's U.S. Senate campaign through her historic tenure as the first Black First Lady of the United States and into her post–White House life, Michelle Obama traces how her approach to dressing evolved as a deliberate and purposeful act. She writes about the "white hot glare" of public scrutiny and how she transformed that pressure into an opportunity to uplift underrepresented voices, spotlight designers of color, and project her values through every wardrobe choice. The book features contributions from her trusted creative team—stylist Meredith Koop, makeup artist Carl Ray, hairstylists Yene Damtew and Njeri Radway—as well as many of the designers who dressed her for memorable occasions, offering behind-the-scenes accounts of how her most iconic looks came together. A foreword by Farah Jasmine Griffin, William B. Ransford Professor at Columbia University, frames the cultural significance of Obama's public presence. An audiobook edition, read by the author, was released simultaneously, and a companion podcast series, IMO: The Look, launched on November 5, 2025.
