Marchesi di Gresy Martinenga Barbaresco DOCG is a prestigious single-vineyard red wine from Piedmont, northwestern Italy. Presented in a 1.5L magnum bottle, this benchmark Barbaresco is crafted entirely from Nebbiolo grapes grown in the renowned Martinenga vineyard โ a 12-hectare amphitheatre-shaped monopole that has been owned by the Marchesi di Gresy family since 1797. The vineyard sits at 280 meters above sea level in the commune of Barbaresco, with south-southwest facing slopes offering a favorable microclimate. The calcareous soil, composed of blue marl and a small percentage of sand, contributes to the wine's characteristic elegance and structure.
Grapes are hand-harvested in early October at yields of no more than 6 tons per hectare. Vinification involves 8 to 10 days of fermentation with a floating cap followed by 20 to 30 days of maceration with a submerged cap and daily pumping over. The wine is aged for 12 months in 225-liter French oak barriques and then an additional 12 months in 50-hectoliter Slavonian oak casks, followed by further bottle aging before release. This extended aging imparts complexity and softens the naturally firm Nebbiolo tannins.
On the nose, the wine offers a fine, gently floral profile with wild cherry, redcurrant, white truffle, dried herbs, and exotic spice. The palate delivers rich red berry and cassis fruit, supported by fresh acidity and a complex, savoury, textured finish with beautifully integrated oak. Thanks to its balance and fine tannin structure, this Martinenga will continue to age gracefully for a decade or more. Ideal pairing with richly seasoned red or white meats and mature cheeses.
