Château de Pez is one of the oldest wine-producing estates in the Saint-Estèphe appellation of Bordeaux, France, founded in 1452 by Jean de Briscos. Since 1995, the estate has been owned by the Rouzaud family of Champagne Louis Roederer — the house celebrated for producing Cristal Champagne. Under their stewardship, significant investments have been made in the 48-hectare Left Bank vineyard and a modernized cellar completed in 2018, which allows for parcel-by-parcel vinification.
The vineyard, situated in northern Saint-Estèphe on gravel, limestone, and clay soils, is planted at a density of 9,000 vines per hectare averaging 25 years of age. The classic Bordeaux blend draws on Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot as its backbone, with smaller contributions from Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Fermentation takes place in both traditional large oak vats and conical stainless-steel tanks, followed by approximately 15 months of aging in 40% new French oak barrels.
The wine delivers aromas and flavors of blackcurrant, blackberry, tobacco leaf, cedar, spice box, and wet earth, underpinned by firm, structured tannins that reward cellaring. Medium- to full-bodied with a 14% ABV, it is best enjoyed within 10 to 18 years of the vintage. Decant young vintages for one to two hours and serve at 60°F (15.5°C). Pairs beautifully with red meats, lamb, duck, game, aged cheeses, and hearty pasta. This Costco offering is presented as a case of six 1.5L magnum bottles.
