Cordero San Giorgio Pinot Nero is an elegant red wine from the Oltrepò Pavese DOC in Lombardy, Italy — a region recognized as the third largest Pinot Nero production area in the world after Champagne and Burgundy. The estate was established by siblings Francesco, Lorenzo, and Caterina Cordero, grandchildren of Luciana Vietti and Alfredo Currado, one of the pioneering families behind the legendary Vietti Estate in Castiglione Falletto in Barolo. The winery is situated in Santa Giuletta, where it practices sustainable, organic viticulture focused on Pinot Nero, Pinot Grigio, and Chardonnay.
This 100% Pinot Nero is sourced from nine different parcels surrounding the winery, with each plot vinified and aged separately to preserve distinct terroir expression. Half of the grapes ferment in stainless steel tanks while the other half mature in two-to-three-year-old French oak barriques. The wine then ages for approximately nine months before spending an additional nine months in bottle prior to release. The varied soils of Oltrepò Pavese — rich in marl, limestone, galestro, and chalk — lend complexity and a distinctive sense of place to every vintage.
On the nose, the wine offers fruity aromas of small red fruits such as cranberry and cherry, complemented by notes of undergrowth and a slight spiciness. On the palate, it is fresh with light sapidity and pleasant, soft tannins. A versatile and food-friendly wine, it pairs well with first courses featuring meat sauces and excels alongside grilled or roasted red meats.
