Guillaume Gonnet Châteauneuf-du-Pape Bel Ami is a distinguished red wine from France's Southern Rhône Valley, crafted by third-generation winemaker Guillaume Gonnet. This elegant wine blends 70% Grenache, 10% Syrah, 10% Mourvèdre, and 10% Cinsault, sourced from the Croix du Bois vineyard with vines aged 50 to 90 years old. The vineyard features the classic Châteauneuf-du-Pape terroir of round pebbles over sand, clay, and limestone soil on a south-east facing slope.
The wine is produced using traditional methods with 60-100% stems removed, followed by 20-30 days of fermentation and maceration in a combination of concrete vats, stainless steel tanks, and wood vats with natural yeast. Aging occurs in 30% pyramid-shaped concrete vats, 30% wooden vats, 30% stainless steel, and 10% demi muids (600L) barrels. The wine exhibits soft, round tannins with a bouquet of red and black fruits including cherries and blackberries, complemented by hints of garrigue, Christmas cake, and peppery spice. It has 14.5% alcohol and less than 2 grams per liter residual sugar.
Professional critics have awarded this wine 93 points from both Wine Spectator and Robert Parker's Wine Advocate. The wine opens beautifully when decanted at least one hour before serving and pairs excellently with Provençal daube, coq au vin, duck magret, charcuterie such as Parma ham and spicy sausage, and aged cheeses like Comté and Beaufort. This fine wine has cellaring potential of 10 to 15 years.
