Château Pontet-Canet is a prestigious Fifth Growth Bordeaux estate located in the Pauillac appellation of the Médoc, France. Situated adjacent to Mouton Rothschild, the estate's 81-hectare vineyard is planted primarily to Cabernet Sauvignon (62%), Merlot (32%), Cabernet Franc (4%), and Petit Verdot (2%), with vines averaging 45 years of age on deep gravel, clay, and limestone soils.
The wine is known for its powerful yet refined character, expressing aromas of black currants, cedar, tobacco leaf, dark fruit, and earthy minerality. Under the stewardship of the Tesseron family since 1975, Pontet-Canet has been widely regarded as one of the overachievers of the 1855 Bordeaux classification, producing wines that rival Second Growths and, in the finest vintages, the First Growths. The estate became the first major Bordeaux producer to earn official organic (AB) certification in 2010 and practices certified biodynamic farming, including the use of horses for soil cultivation in place of tractors.
Vinification takes place in conical wooden vats and concrete tanks, with aging split between new French oak barrels and custom 900-liter clay amphorae made from the estate's own gravel and limestone. The wine typically benefits from 10 to 15 years of cellaring, with the finest vintages drinking well for 45 years or more. Best served at 60°F and pairs beautifully with lamb, beef, duck, veal, and mushroom-based dishes. Each case contains 6 bottles of 750ml.
