Dwarf English Laurel (Prunus laurocerasus) is a compact, low-growing evergreen shrub prized for its dense, glossy dark green foliage and tidy mounded form. Sold in a 4.2-gallon (15.9-liter) nursery container, this is a well-established specimen ready for transplanting into the garden or a large patio container.
This adaptable evergreen thrives in USDA Hardiness Zones 6–9 and tolerates full sun to partial shade, making it suitable for a wide range of landscape conditions including dry shade — an area where many other shrubs struggle. In spring, fragrant white flower spikes emerge, attracting bees, butterflies, and other pollinators. Small ornamental black fruit follow in fall, providing additional wildlife value.
At maturity, the dwarf form typically reaches 2–5 feet tall with a similar spread, depending on the specific cultivar, making it ideal for low hedges, foundation plantings, borders, and ground cover in difficult spots. It is tolerant of urban pollution and salt spray, and requires minimal maintenance once established. A light pruning after flowering each spring keeps the plant tidy and encourages dense growth.
Plant in well-drained soil amended with compost. Water deeply and regularly until the shrub is established, then reduce frequency. Apply a balanced slow-release fertilizer in early spring to support healthy growth.
