Guillaume Gonnet's Bel Ami is a flagship red wine from the prestigious Châteauneuf-du-Pape AOC in France's Southern Rhône Valley, presented here in an impressive 6-liter format. The Gonnet family has been rooted in the Bédarrides commune of the appellation since 1600, with Guillaume Gonnet taking the helm as winemaker in 2006. The estate follows minimalist, terroir-focused winemaking with biodynamic agricultural principles and minimal wood influence.
The Bel Ami is a classic Southern Rhône blend of 70% Grenache, 10% Syrah, 10% Mourvèdre, and 10% Cinsault, sourced from vines 50 to 90 years old at the Croix du Bois vineyard. The southeast-facing site features round pebbles (galets roulés) on the surface above sand, clay, and limestone soils — the hallmark terroir of Châteauneuf-du-Pape. Grapes are hand-picked as required by AOC regulations, fermented with natural yeast over 20 to 30 days, and aged across a combination of pyramid-shaped concrete vats, wooden vats, stainless steel tanks, and 600-liter demi-muid barrels.
The wine opens with a bouquet of red and black fruits — cherries and blackberries — layered with hints of garrigue, Christmas spice, and a peppery finish. Tannins are soft and round, lending an elegant structure with a cellaring potential of 10 to 15 years. It is recommended to decant at least one hour before serving. At 14.5% alcohol with less than 2 grams per liter of residual sugar, it pairs beautifully with Provençal daube, coq au vin, duck magret, charcuterie, and aged cheeses such as Comté and Beaufort.
