Paesani Amaro Gran Sasso is a traditional Italian herbal liqueur crafted by Paesani Liquori, a family-run distillery founded in 1961 in the hamlet of Collevecchio, Abruzzo, Italy. Named after Gran Sasso d'Italia — the highest peak in the Apennine Mountains — this flagship amaro is handcrafted by Antonio Paesani and his son Mirco using a recipe and production methodology unchanged since the distillery's founding.
The amaro is produced through cold-maceration of more than 20 hand-selected botanicals in grain neutral spirits for 60 days, allowing maximum extraction of flavor and aroma before hand-pressing. Botanicals include gentian root, rhubarb, orange peel, quinine bark, cardamom, imperatoria, vanilla, and centaurea (mountain bluet), among other traditional ingredients. No artificial colorings or flavorings are used, and the spirit is lightly sweetened with caramelized sugar. The result is a medium-bitter, herbaceous amaro with notes of gentian, rhubarb, citrus peel, and warm spice, with a bright, bitter finish and lower residual sweetness compared to many other amari. It bottled at 30% ABV and earned a Gold Medal at the World Liqueur Awards 2023.
Serve neat or over ice as a traditional after-dinner digestif, or use as a versatile cocktail component.
