Château de Poncié 949 is the estate's iconic Fleurie wine, a certified organic red from the Fleurie appellation in Beaujolais, France. Made entirely from Gamay Noir grapes grown on pink granite soils, this 750ml bottle represents a generous, fruity, and velvety expression of the region.
Vines averaging 25 years of age are sourced from three distinct parcels near the village of Fleurie: the Montgenas hillock (contributing structure), La Brirette hillock (providing fruitiness and elegance), and a parcel below the Château park (adding freshness). Planted at around 6,000 vines per hectare, the low-density approach allows generous canopy development and precise root expression.
Vinification takes place in 50-hectoliter concrete and stainless-steel vats. Grapes are cold macerated whole or partially destemmed, with no sulfur added during vinification. Fermentation lasts 8 to 12 days for delicate aromatic extraction, and pigeage is performed gently and traditionally by foot. Twenty percent of maturation occurs in weathered oak barrels, lending subtle complexity without overpowering the fruit. The wine was certified organic beginning with the 2020 vintage and has received scores of 93 points (2019 vintage) and 92 points (2020 vintage) from James Suckling. It pairs well with a wide variety of dishes.
