Carruades de Lafite is the prestigious second wine (Deuxième Vin) of Château Lafite Rothschild, one of Bordeaux's five classified First Growth estates situated in the Pauillac appellation of the Médoc. First produced in the mid-1850s, it is among the oldest second wines in Bordeaux, carrying the refinement and terroir-driven elegance of the Grand Vin in a more accessible, forward-drinking style. The estate's Carruades plateau, located near Château Mouton Rothschild, lends its name to this celebrated label.
This red Bordeaux blend is typically composed of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot as the dominant varieties, complemented by smaller proportions of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, with the exact blend varying by vintage. Medium-bodied and polished, the wine delivers characteristic Pauillac aromatics of cassis, black cherry, cedar, tobacco leaf, and floral notes, with silky tannins and a refined, lingering finish. Reviewers consistently rate it in the 90–94 point range across recent vintages.
Carruades de Lafite is approachable upon release while possessing the structure to evolve further over several years in the bottle. From the 2012 vintage onward, each bottle features an anti-counterfeiting seal with a unique numbered code on the capsule, verifiable on the estate's website. The 750ml format is ideal for sharing or cellaring.
