Château Smith Haut Lafitte Blanc is a prestigious white Bordeaux from the Pessac-Léognan appellation, produced by the Grand Cru Classé estate owned by Daniel and Florence Cathiard since 1990. The blend is composed of 90% Sauvignon Blanc, 5% Sauvignon Gris, and 5% Sémillon, sourced from approximately 11 hectares of white varietals planted behind the château, with some old-vine Sauvignon Blanc reaching 70 years of age.
The wine is fermented in French oak barrels, 50% new, and aged for 12 months on lees with bâtonnage. Native yeasts are used during vinification, and the estate follows biodynamic farming practices, earning a Robert Parker Green Emblem for sustainable viticulture in 2020. The Cathiards also operate their own cooperage, producing roughly 70% of their barrels on-site.
This white Bordeaux presents a pale-yellow color with an expressive nose of fresh citrus, ripe stone fruit, floral notes of elderflower and orange blossom, and spicy overtones of star anise. The palate is concentrated and powerful yet polished, with wonderful acidity and great length. Professional scores for the 2019 vintage range from 93 to 97 points, with critics praising its structure, complexity, and aging potential of 15 to 20 years.
