Château Haut-Batailley is a Fifth Growth Pauillac estate in the heart of Bordeaux, classified in the prestigious 1855 Classification. The property was acquired in 2017 by the Cazes family, also owners of Château Lynch-Bages, who have steadily elevated the estate's wines while preserving its distinct Pauillac identity. The 40-hectare vineyard is planted on the appellation's signature deep gravel soils, which provide excellent drainage and encourage deep-rooted vines that deliver concentration and complexity.
The 2022 vintage is a blend of 70% Cabernet Sauvignon and 30% Merlot, aged 12 months in 65% new French oak barrels. The growing season was marked by record-breaking heat and drought, yet careful canopy management and early pruning preserved freshness and lifted aromatics. This 1.5-liter magnum format enhances the wine's aging potential, allowing it to develop even more gracefully over time.
The wine opens with layers of blackcurrant, red cherry, and blueberry alongside notes of lead pencil, tobacco leaf, crushed stone, and subtle floral tones of iris and violets. The palate is medium- to full-bodied with a seamless balance of power and finesse, ultra-fine tannins, and a long, mineral-driven finish with iron-tinged purity. Critics awarded it 94–95 points across the board, with Jeb Dunnuck calling it "up with the finest vintages I've tasted from this château." Best from 2028 onward with 30 or more years of overall longevity.
