Paul Hobbs Pinot Noir Sonoma Coast is a benchmark California red wine crafted by pioneering winemaker Paul Hobbs, who established his namesake winery in 1991 with a vision of minimal intervention and meticulous care to capture the purest expression of place. The Sonoma Coast AVA is a rugged, fog-laden coastal appellation where cool maritime influence and steep terrain push traditional viticulture to its limits, yielding Pinot Noir wines prized for their vibrant acidity, firm structure, and pure, expressive fruit character.
This 100% Pinot Noir is made with a commitment to quality at every step: grapes are hand-sorted in the field while still cold, with a percentage of whole clusters included for added complexity. Fermentation takes place in small, open-top stainless steel tanks using indigenous yeasts, preceded by a 5-day cold soak and followed by a 15-day maceration with gentle punchdowns. Malolactic fermentation occurs spontaneously in barrel, and the wine is then aged in a selection of new and neutral French oak barrels before being bottled unfined and unfiltered.
The wine presents a deep ruby color with aromas of Bing cherry, wild mountain berry, and an ethereal note of damp earth. Vibrant red and blue fruits carry through on the palate alongside hints of oyster shell and stony coastal minerality. Silky texture and uplifted acidity add sophistication and intensity, while a remarkably long finish reflects the wine's cool coastal origins. The 2022 vintage received scores of 97 from the Tasting Panel, 95 from James Suckling, 94 from both Jeb Dunnuck and Wine Enthusiast, and 93 from Robert Parker's Wine Advocate.
