Château d'Yquem is the world's most celebrated dessert wine and the only Sauternes to receive the Premier Cru Supérieur designation in the Bordeaux Wine Official Classification of 1855. Produced in the Sauternes appellation within Bordeaux's Graves region in southwestern France, d'Yquem has been crafting extraordinary sweet wines since the 16th century and is now owned by LVMH.
The wine is crafted from approximately 80% Sémillon and 20% Sauvignon Blanc grapes harvested from 126 hectares of vineyard. What makes d'Yquem exceptional is its labor-intensive production: harvesters make multiple passes through the vineyard — averaging six per season — to hand-select only grapes affected by Botrytis cinerea, the "noble rot" fungus that concentrates sugars and imparts extraordinary complexity. Yields average just nine hectoliters per hectare, far below the regional norm, and the wine is aged in new oak barrels for approximately three years. In vintages deemed unworthy of the château's standards, the entire crop is sold off anonymously rather than bear the d'Yquem label.
The resulting wine offers extraordinary complexity, concentration, and sweetness balanced by vibrant acidity. Tasting notes include clementine, clear honey, white flowers, orange blossom, apricot, honeysuckle, almond, and underlying mineral notes. ABV is approximately 14%. With proper cellaring, a bottle of d'Yquem can evolve and improve for a century or more, making it one of the most age-worthy white wines in the world.
