El Jolgorio Cuishe is a traditional artisanal mezcal from Oaxaca, Mexico, crafted from 100% wild-harvested Agave Karwinskii (Cuishe). The Cuishe agave grows in a distinctive cylindrical, stalk-shaped piña with leaves spreading at the top, and is typically harvested at around 13 years of age, yielding a dense, flavorful heart.
The mezcal is produced using time-honored methods: the agave piñas are roasted in an earthen pit, crushed with a stone tahona wheel drawn by mule, fermented in open-air vessels, and double-distilled in copper pot stills. Each bottle is individually hand-marked with batch-specific details — including the edition number, harvest year, mezcalero's name, and bottle number out of total production — connecting the drinker directly to the artisan family behind every batch. El Jolgorio represents a collective of mezcal-producing families from ten different regions of Oaxaca, a project begun by the Cortés family in 2010.
On the nose, El Jolgorio Cuishe presents earthy, wet-clay aromas with floral and vegetal notes. The palate delivers a complex interplay of smoke, earthy minerality, subtle tropical fruit, and herbal undertones, with a smooth, lingering finish. Bottled at 47% ABV (94 proof), this is a rich, contemplative sipper well suited to those exploring the diverse world of agave spirits beyond tequila.
