Heitz Cellar's Linda Falls Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon is a single-vineyard expression from Howell Mountain in Napa Valley, introduced in 2013 as the third distinct vineyard bottling from this historic winery. The wine is made from 100% Cabernet Sauvignon grown on seven sustainably farmed, CCOF-certified organic and Certified Fish Friendly Farming acres on Howell Mountain, situated at an average elevation of 1,500 feet above the valley fog.
The vineyard was planted in 2002 near the gateway to the Linda Falls Preserve, surrounded by redwoods, pine trees, and wildlife. The well-drained volcanic soils and cooler mountain climate create longer hang time, yielding smaller berries with thick, deeply-hued skins at characteristically low yields. Vines are planted in narrow rows deliberately angled to maximize sun exposure during the growing season.
In the cellar, the fruit is harvested riper than Heitz's other Cabernet Sauvignon blocks, with a higher pH to balance the naturally heavy tannin structure typical of Howell Mountain fruit. The wine undergoes a distinctive three-year oak regimen: one year in neutral American oak tanks followed by two years in 100% new tight-grain French oak barrels. Winemaker Brittany Sherwood describes it as showing "a firm tannin structure yet silky, with a juicy lingering finish." Recent vintages have earned critical scores ranging from 94 to 98 points, with aromas of black cherry, cassis, espresso, dark plum, and sage, and a drinking window extending well into the 2040s.
