Sweeties, also known as Oroblanco or "white gold," are a seedless citrus hybrid developed by the University of California, Riverside, created by crossing a white grapefruit with an acidless pomelo. These fruits are prized for their sweet, aromatic flavor without the bitterness typically associated with grapefruit. The fruit has a thick, lime-green rind that may turn pale yellow when ripe, with a soft, smooth skin that peels easily like an orange. Inside, the cream-colored flesh is segmented, juicy, and tastes mildly sweet with a strong citrus aroma and just a hint of pleasant tanginess.
Sweeties are harvested in California, Florida, Australia, and Israel (where they are marketed under the name "Jaffa Sweetie"). The fruit is in season from September through December and retains freshness on the tree throughout its peak season. Rich in vitamin C (providing 100% of the daily recommended amount per medium fruit), sweeties offer excellent immune system support, antioxidant properties, and anti-inflammatory benefits. They are also a good source of potassium (150-200mg per 100g), which supports healthy blood pressure, and contain beneficial B vitamins, calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, and dietary fiber.
This 5-pound bag contains approximately 8-10 medium-sized fruits, perfect for fresh eating, juicing, adding to salads, or making marmalades and sorbets. The thick rind can be candied for use in desserts or dried for adding to tea. To select ripe fruit, look for fruits that feel heavy for their size with a floral, grassy fragrance. The green color does not indicate ripeness as even deeply green fruits can be perfectly sweet and ready to eat.
