Pedroncelli Mother Clone Zinfandel is a bold, expressive red wine from Dry Creek Valley in Sonoma County, California, produced by a family-owned winery with deep roots in the region. The "Mother Clone" designation reflects a storied viticultural tradition: the original Zinfandel vines were planted in 1904, and when the Pedroncelli family purchased the ranch in 1927, they preserved this heritage. In 1980, cuttings from those original 1904 vines were used to plant a new estate block, creating the "Mother Clone" vineyard that gives this wine its name.
The 2022 vintage blends Zinfandel fruit from three generations of mother vines alongside contributions from the Bushnell and Giovannoni vineyards, with 9% Petite Sirah added for depth and structure. Grapes were hand-picked in early September to preserve acidity ahead of a heat wave, then destemmed and given a 48-hour cold soak before fermentation in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks with daily pump-overs and delestage. The wine was aged for 12 months in American oak barrels, 30% new oak.
On the nose, expect spicy aromas of cinnamon, white pepper, red berries, and vanilla. The palate delivers flavors of black cherry, licorice, and warm baking spices, finishing with a rounded touch of pepper. Alcohol is 15.5%. Enjoy now or cellar for three to five years.
