J. Vidal-Fleury Crozes-Hermitage is a red wine from the Northern Rhône Valley of France, produced by one of the region's oldest and most storied négociants. Founded in 1781, Vidal Fleury holds the distinction of being the oldest continuously operating wine estate in the entire Rhône Valley, with a heritage that stretches back to a visit by Thomas Jefferson in 1787. The house has been owned by the renowned Guigal family since 1984 and underwent extensive modernization in 2006.
The Crozes-Hermitage appellation surrounds the famous Hermitage hill and produces wines primarily from Syrah. Vidal Fleury's expression is medium-bodied with fresh, vibrant, crisp red fruits and a characteristic black pepper accent on both the nose and palate. Reviewers have noted aromas of incense, leather, and dark plum in recent vintages, with the wine offering good aging potential through the early 2030s. The 2018 vintage earned particular praise for its peppery black raspberries, herbs, smoke, and spice, with a lifted, energetic, and juicy character.
The wine is best served slightly cool at around 15.5°C (60°F) and pairs well with classic meat dishes including lamb, beef, duck, pork, and game, as well as roasted and braised preparations, mushrooms, and hearty pasta. Young vintages may benefit from 1 to 2 hours of decanting to allow the aromas to open fully. Each bottle contains 750mL and is sold in cases of 12.
