Sons of Eden Selene Tempranillo is a red wine from the Barossa Valley in South Australia, crafted from Tempranillo grapes grown in the Light Pass sub-region on classic red soil over limestone. The vineyard, believed to be among the oldest Tempranillo plantings in the region, was established in 1999 and is managed using low-input, sustainable viticultural practices.
The wine's name pays homage to Selene, the Greek Goddess of the moon, as the Tempranillo harvest at Light Pass Vineyard traditionally coincides with the first full moon of the Barossa harvest season. Fruit is hand-harvested, destemmed, and fermented in open-topped stainless steel fermenters as well as a 900-litre closed oak cask, with extended skin contact and daily hand plunging to gently extract colour and tannin. After 30 days on skins, the wine is pressed into a mix of new and seasoned 500-litre French oak puncheons for 30 months of undisturbed maturation, then naturally clarified and bottled without filtration.
The wine presents a deep ruby red colour with intense dark cherry and smoked plum aromatics layered over a complex rack of dried herbs. On the palate, a fleshy black-fruit core is framed by textural savoury tannins with a distinct European feel to its weight and flow. It has received 92 points from James Suckling.
