Alvear Pedro Ximénez Solera 1927 is the family's most iconic sweet Pedro Ximénez wine from Bodegas Alvear, Spain's oldest continuously operated family-owned winery established in 1729. This non-vintage wine contains some 1927 material from a solera that was founded in its eponymous year. The wine is crafted from hand-harvested Pedro Ximénez grapes picked early in their ripening cycle from 40-year-old estate vineyards in the Sierra de Montilla at 1,050 feet elevation on famous chalky Albariza soil. The grapes are sun-dried on straw mats for a week, then pressed in a traditional olive oil press, yielding an incredibly sweet must that decants in concrete tinajas before being fortified to 16% ABV.
This dark brown/amber wine is aged in American oak butts for an average of 30 years in the system of soleras and criaderas, producing a dense, super sweet, intensely rich beverage with notes of figs, toffee, caramel syrup, molasses, coffee, ripe plums, caramelized figs, espresso roast, white chocolate, crushed nuts, iodine, and chalk. The palate reveals an unctuously textured, thick wine with balancing acidity, terrific overall balance, and a finish that won't quit.
The wine has received exceptional critical acclaim: 98 points from Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, 96 points from Wine Enthusiast (#5 Top 100 of 2017), 96 points from Jeb Dunnuck, 95 points from Vinous Media, 94 points from James Suckling, and 17.5/20 from Jancis Robinson. This is a standalone dessert wine meant to be consumed slowly and introspectively after a meal, perhaps with banana bread topped with molasses and walnuts, or alongside a cigar.
