Chateau Bourdieu is a red wine from the Blaye Côtes de Bordeaux appellation on Bordeaux's Right Bank in France. The estate dates back to 1464 and spans 180 acres with vineyards planted in a mixture of clay, limestone, and gravel soils, ideal for the Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Cabernet Sauvignon varietals grown there. The vines average a mature 35 years of age, contributing to the wine's concentration and character.
This red blend is composed of 87% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 3% Cabernet Franc. The wine presents a deep, intense ruby red color with aromas of red fruits, blackcurrant, and redcurrant. On the palate, it is round and juicy with smooth, well-integrated tannins, good structure, and a long, finessed finish. Brooding blackcurrant, black cherry, and cassis are complemented by notes of fine tobacco and cedar. The Decanter World Wine Awards awarded this wine a Gold Medal and 95 points, describing it as "persistent and concentrated with satin tannins and supporting acidity."
The estate is owned and managed by the Schweitzer family, who keep yields low and carefully sort grapes before fermenting in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks. The grapes macerate for 3 to 4 weeks and then age in tank to preserve the bright character of the fruit. Alcohol content is 14.0%. Pairs well with aged hard cheeses, mushroom risotto, pasta bolognese, grilled beef, or roasted duck.
