Gainey Vineyard Pinot Noir from the Sta. Rita Hills Estate is a premium California red wine showcasing the singular, savory character of the cool coastal Santa Barbara County appellation. This elegant Pinot Noir comes from three of the Gainey family's organically farmed ranches in Santa Barbara and Santa Ynez, where four generations have cultivated the rolling hills running from Solvang to Lompoc.
Aged 10 months in French oak before bottling, this wine displays beautifully earthy, briary characteristics with a palate of plush red silk. The nose offers aromas of black raspberry, cherry, dark berries, licorice, and warm spices including cinnamon, mace, and dried ginger. Light-bodied yet fresh and vivid, it features tasty mulberry and cherry notes that zip along a light, chalky spine with a red tea hint and salty, coastal acidity on the finish. Powdery tannins frame the broad mouthfeel, carrying flavors of ripe red fruit and complex spice notes.
The Sta. Rita Hills appellation is the coolest, westernmost sub-region of the larger Santa Ynez Valley, with a climate naturally suited for Pinot Noir thanks to crisp ocean breezes and well-drained, limestone-rich calcareous soil. Wine Enthusiast awarded this bottling 94 points, noting it "always overdelivers" with elegant and fresh aromatics. Wine Spectator recommends drinking now through 2025. This wine pairs exceptionally well with duck, salmon, roasted chicken, and other Pinot-friendly dishes.
